Sandakan Malaysia is located on the island of Borneo. I guess 30 years ago it was a very rich city, but you can’t tell it now. Used to the nicer cities on peninsular Malaysia, I was rather shocked to see Sandakan. It is is dark city and very dreary as soon as the sun goes down. It had one of the worst vibes of any city I have been to in a long time. Hotels are very expensive and not really worth it at all. The only reason to visit Sandakan is to catch the ferry to Zamboanga City in the Philippines. This video shows a little bit about the downtown area at night.

Now that Christmas is coming to an end, tomorrow will be the day of returns where everyone returns their gifts for either cash or the right gift. It is almost as much a ritual of Christmas as shopping is. Nothing anyone ever buys it seems is quite right and sometimes the money is worth more. I remember that usually was the case when I was growing up. An expensive and useless gift could be exchanged for cash plus a smaller more practical gift. And that’s ok. The joy of giving gifts is in the giving, right?

I was reading about this strange behavior that is exhibited by some people who make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. It’s called Jerusalem syndrome.What happens is that Christians traveling in the Holy Land think they see Jesus and some become delusional according to this Reuters report. (more…)

I have used several different money transfer services in the past and I have always equated MoneyGram and Western Union together in the same general category. I knew all about Western Unions money transfer service and I knew just how expensive it is. Send $200 and pay more than $20 for the privilege. Wow, just too much money. Sometimes I would just have to bite the bullet and use them.
